Skills North West 2012

Skills North West is a two day event taking place on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th February 2012 at EventCity at The Trafford Centre in Manchester.

There will be employers, training providers, sector skills councils, universities, charities/voluntary sector organisations and careers and business advisers providing a range of opportunities.

Representatives from the following industries will be there

• Manufacturing, engineering, construction, science, automotive industries and telecommunications
  
• Hospitality and catering, travel, leisure & tourism and retail
  
• Transport & logistics and financial services
  
• Hair & beauty, performing arts and music

Get Started with Football

If you are 16-25 and into football but out of work then Get Started with Football from The Prince's Trust could help you achieve your goals.

The five day football programme could help you

• learn how to coach from professionals
  
• get new skills and qualifications

• build your confidence
  
• make a difference to your local community

Tomorrow's Engineers

Tomorrow's Engineers is a website which promotes engineering to young people in schools and colleges.

On this website you can find out how engineering is a key part of industry, fashion, tv, media, housing, health and science.

The Tomorrow's Engineers site have created a poster which shows different areas of engineering that can be found in everyday life. They have more resources here

Jobs and Training Fair

The Connexions Jobs and Training Fair will be held at the Talkshop (the Tatton Road Entrance) in Sale on Tuesday 7th February 2012.

If you are interested in apprenticeships or jobs after leaving school or college there will be people to answer your questions.

Parents and guardians are welcome to attend the event to find out about the range of opportunities available for their sons and daughters leaving school.

The event runs from 3pm-6pm on Tuesday 7th February 2012 - no need to make an appointment - just call in!

Work Experience Opportunities @ Trafford Council

Trafford Council is working in partnership with Job Centre Plus to support an initiative to provide young, unemployed people with an opportunity to experience working life and increase their future employment prospects.

This new Government programme provides interested individuals aged 18 to 21 with a chance to gain valuable work experience for two months working between 20 to 30 hours per week.

Learning and working in the motor industry

Automotive Solutions specialise in assisting young people with training programmes and career development opportunities in all areas of the motor vehicle industry and associated trades.

Their new state of the art facility in Trafford Park provides vocational education & Apprenticeship programmes for 14-19 years olds. Find out more about the centre here.

Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships to NVQ 2 and 3 are available across Greater manchester. Find out more here.

GMPower allows 14-16 year olds the chance to mix work-based experience with the curriculum. Successful completion of the course will result in a Level 1 in Vehicle Maintenance (QCF). Find out more here

TeenBiz - business start up scheme for under 18s

TeenBiz is the UK's first business start up scheme aimed at teens aged 13-18.

The TeenBiz scheme is free for students and aims to help 100 new businesses on their way over the next three years, with 24 awards of up to £500 being given in the first year and numbers growing each subsequent year.

To be in with a chance of being awarded up to £500 you will need to complete a business related task at www.mykindacrowd.com.

Once you have completed the business task you can apply via a standard online application form or a video entry on to the TeenBiz website.

Your application will be reviewed by the TeenBiz team and five shortlisted applicants are then reviewed by the sponsor company who chooses the winner.

You can search case studies by interests, personal qualities or by qualification level.

There is also a random job generator if you need some inspiration.

Moving On - helping 14-19 year-olds apply for jobs

Moving on is a free interactive online resource from the BT Learning and Skills programme which helps young people find out and develop their personal skills and how best to promote themselves when applying for jobs.

The site has videos, online animations and activities which help students learn how to identify their own skills, how to market themselves, and how to apply for jobs that are a good fit for their personality, interests and skills.

The four modules are:
